As a part of the ECASD Equity Statement, released on March 1, 2021, we are asking that the School Board amend the commitment or create a new resolution that requires all schools within the district to recognize and celebrate the diversity and heritage months that fall within the school year.
These include:
February - Black History Month
March - Women's History Month
April - Hmong Heritage Month & Celebrate Diversity Month
May - Asian/Pacific Islander Month
September 15 - October 15 - National Hispanic Heritage Month (We also ask that this month include Latinx folx)
October - LGBT History Month
November - National Native American Heritage Month
While we believe that education, inclusion, access and diversity should be included in education throughout the year, having dedicated months to celebrate and learn more about marginalized individuals betters the schools and community as a whole.
By creating a statement or commitment to recognizing and participating in these months, it holds educators accountable to being actively involved in continual diversity and inclusion within the ECASD school district.
This cause is specifically important to all of the marginalized individuals and families within the community who are not recognized or given accurate representation in courses, materials, and other educational platforms. It creates a sense of belonging for those who are underrepresented in the community, as well as encourages acceptance, advocacy, and value from students who are not in the BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ communities.
